Customs Strike Affected My Salad Dressing Preference!! >:(

Thanks to the strike at Kuwait customs, I had to season my salad with the artificial salad dressing (which I happen to dislike) instead of my preferred fresh yogurt which had run out of stock*.

When will this ridiculousness end???

Seriously?

*According to Kuwaitful and word-of-mouth.

Lost Cat at Mishref

Just spotted this over Twitter: Prof Kaeml AlSaleh tweeted:

He's in Mishref, block 4.

For more information, kindly contact Prof. Kamel AlSaleh (click here)

Personal thoughts:

It saddens me when animals get neglected, I really hope this kitty was NOT thrown out, and that he might just dropped this diwaniya a visit. I really hope he gets back home safely if indeed he's lost.

If he wasn't, then I hope he finds a loving home soon!

Kuwaiti Flash Mob! (Continuously UPDATED)

So, how are you doing post-election day? ;)

Shocked? Surprised? Frustrated? Numb? Pessimistic?

Well, I'm still keeping it positive! :D

And I know I'm not the only one; Zain and Cinemagic are keeping it positive too!

AMAZING!

If your spirits weren't lifted; then you might not have any!

I never thought I'd watch a flash mob video that actually happened in Kuwait! We so need more of these!!
I got tears in my eyes! The patriotic songs used are my top faves! Especially "Ana Kuwaiti"! Oh my God, I used to sing this one repeatedly during the times of the liberation! :'D

3ad I was planning to go the Avenues today but I couldn't! Wish I made it, maybe I would've seen this!!! Flash mobs aren't supposed to be announced, so nobody would notify me! Hopefully one day I'll witness something like this!

Shout out to all those souls who keep spreading positivity around! You guys rock! Kuwait has faith in those who have faith in it!

NEVER lose hope!

Updates:

I shall be adding more videos as I discover them ;)

Reactions were hailing all over the place since the videos went viral! A simple search with the words "flash mob Kuwait" over Twitter would get you hundreds of tweets praising this new national celebration! Bloggosphere could not miss this too; here some links:

Check out The Avenues twitter page for a lovely set of pictures of the flash!

*Special Thanks to Bloggylife for sharing the first video!

Stuff I Like About Election Day!

Yep, believe it or not, there are stuff I actually like about elections!

Normally, and as the majority of us, I'd be thinking the same way Danderma thinks about elections (check her post here). I'd just be loathing the day, dreading all those "unpleasant" stuff that usually (if not always) come with election time; those nagging supporters with those false smiles desperately begging for our votes, those cops bossing you around...etc.

Just this morning I was thinking of writing a similar post to Danderma's, but after checking her post, I got inspired to write just the opposite! :)

Yes, this year I'm choosing to keep it positive! :)

Aren't we all just sick of constantly bashing and lamenting almost everything around us? Tara mallait! wallah la3at chbdy! I'm an optimist at heart, and I truly have been affected by all the negativity we seem to be feeding ourselves with consistently without us even noticing sometimes.

But it doesn't have to be that way!

With darkness comes light! :D

So, maintaining this in mind, here are some of the stuff I like about elections:

1. The most important thing I like about elections is that I get reminded that I have a voice that counts. I CAN make a difference if I choose to. The right to vote is not available to all, you know, so I should be thankful I got a chance to make a change.

2. Since casting ballots takes place at schools, I get a chance to visit my old time school buildings and start roaming the place reminiscing over happier more innocent days of my life. It's ALWAYS fun!

3. And since lots of people come to vote from my own area, I get a chance to meet up with long lost friends or neighbors I never see anymore, and that's fun too! Especially, if I plan ahead and decide to go vote with our own old time friends! We can have a blast! Waiting in long queues will pass by in a minute if you're enjoying an engaging "election-free" chitchat with a dear old soul you miss so dearly!

4. There are always cute and fun moments to happen anytime, we just have to be alert to actually see and enjoy them! Like today, I was walking around after I was done voting, roaming the old middle school building which seems so foreign now, trying to figure out which was what, when my legs took me to the garden in the middle of the building. The garden that my friends and I had so many fun breakfast memories at! I watched as two adorable sparrows (zarazeer) and a couple of brown-feathered doves tapped their way at some flowers! I thought that was so cute and utterly hilarious as one of the sparrows kept fighting off the others trying to keep the flowers all to himself! I had a blast! God bless 'em!

Here are couple of pics I took of the adorable encounter!

Never mind the horrible quality; those are mobile pics!

I tried to take some video but sadly they flew away before I get a chance to.

Oh, and another God-bless'em moment! When it was my turn to go inside the voting room earlier, I was received with a mixture of contrasting attitudes that got me perplexed for a moment. I had no idea which direction to head to first; I thought I should go one way when I was supposed to be heading to another. When I finally realized which way to go, I was kindly welcomed by the most adoring man I met today! I have no idea what his real position is (whether he was a judge or a counselor), but he just kept smiling in the most adoringly and fatherly way ever, and made me feel totally at home! Not that I was feeling embarrassed or anything, but the women besides him was the total opposite! She was kinda like "scolding" me for something I never did! Shtabeen!! So!! I couldn't find my way for nanoseconds! That could not possibly ruin your precious day! No body's born all-knowing! Wallah!

So, you see? Who says things can't be bright during election time? The likes of such kind souls such as this man's will always warm my heart and make me cross off any bad encounters that happen to be in the way!

5. The soft kind of Kuwaiti souls: Yes, there are fake untrue gestures and actions here and there (naturally), but there are those souls who truly care for the welfare of the voters, especially the elderly ones. It warms my heart when I see a cop gently attending to an elderly person and kindly helping them on their journey to vote. It delights my heart to see paramedics doing their jobs with the soul purpose of ensuring everyone's healthy and safe on the scene. Those people rarely get acknowledge by many of us; I sincerely have no idea why. I WISH I could give at least a quarter of what they give to the benefit and welfare to complete strangers; the strangers they consider family.

6. When I'm heading towards the gate of the school, I have to cautiously walk the furthest away from any clusters of desperate panting girls trying to throw me their candidates' brochures or pictures (seriously, why would I wanna be carrying those inside? I already know whom I'm voting to! Plus, they won't allow them in anyways! But there are some cute innocent faces that try to give me their uncle's pic, or their aunt's neighbor's son-in-law or whatever's something! I cannot help but give them a wide smile and gently reject their offer. Honestly, I don't think the hassle and the mess of the elections should be forced on children at such a young age, but that's beside the point...

7. Okay, this is new! This year some restaurants have been encouraging people to vote by having special offers! Like what Elevation Burger is having today! They are offering a FREE MEAL to those who voted! Also, The Chocolate Bar is offering a free hot chocolate. What's not to love about a free offer, eh? ;P

Here's a shot of my tasty free meal! Thanks Elevation Burger! :D

8. I have no idea about you but I don't usually get out of the house much. I'm what you'd call a homebody "baytootiya", so I like to explore some new places every now and then, and have new experiences. So, a special event such as elections (which is something that doesn't occur on a daily basis) is worth the visit. I love to take my camera and just shoot some thrilling moments as they happen while I fight my way through the real licensed photographers; it always makes me feel ALIVE!

9. The general over all feeling of patriotism. I don't really consider myself a patriotic person, but I'm Kuwaiti; I cannot help but be in love with my beloved motherland. So, listening to the radio or flipping through TV channels (even browsing youtube) and catching those happy old time patriotic songs will always lift up my spirits and instantly make me happy!

10. Last but not least; The over all feeling of competition! Again, I don't really consider myself a competitive person, but sometimes I catch the bug and I find myself tuning in eagerly awaiting the results. Sometimes, I even might cheer up for the winning team (more like the ones I want to win, I mean!). It's not always "cheerful" as we know! But! I'm trying to keep it positive as I said! ;P

Hmmm... what else? I'm pretty sure there are much out there that I've missed. I shall try to add some if I recalled any.

*****

So, yeah, I have so many stuff I loath about elections as I initially said, but for a change, let me not lament and share a more pleasant take on the election day! ;)

What about you? What stuff do you find yourself enjoying about elections? :)

Make that Change: VOTE for KUWAIT 2012!!!

It's February the 2nd.

Time has come.

If you're Kuwaiti, over 21, then today's your chance to make a difference by practicing your constitutional given right: The right to VOTE.

I know, we've had it with the one-step-farward-ten-thousand-steps-back, the cloud of misfortune and corruption has bestowed upon us for years. With each election, we've kept our hopes high and wished for a better future, yet, things never seemed to change for the better. Most people have lost hope and a lot of them might not even be voting today. Do not be one of those.

I can see how hopeless they've become, I can relate, only when I remember that by doing so, we're only turning our backs on what really counts: Kuwait's right to PROSPERITY and GROWTH.

Do we want to turn your backs on our beloved Kuwait???

I don't! That's why I'm lifting my head up high and keeping it positive. That's the least I can give back to the precious land I proudly call "home". Never lose faith in Kuwait.

*****

So, are your still turning your back on Kuwait???

Check out this genius ad, and change your mind:

So, go on! Get that little piece of evidence of what makes you who you are, a PROUD KUWAITI, and go MAKE A DIFFERENCE, your vote counts!

Don't forget to choose "wisely";

VOTE for KUWAIT!

Stood Up For a Kitty... Got a Free Meal

Oh my God.

I cannot believe what just happened. I've just got home after a very long day, longing to sit back and have dinner before crashing dead asleep. My stomach is silently rumbling at the moment, especially when the delicious distinctive smell of the food I just ordered from a local famous chain restaurant is luring me to have it. But I'm not so eager to have it anymore. Somehow, I feel it's not right.

Why? Well, I got it for free.

*****

You might think I might be crazy not to be happy to have something for free; everyone looooves anything free & cannot even think twice about not accepting something for free. Well, I don't. I feel that I don't deserve this food that I did not pay for. There's a huge lump in my chest preventing me from feeling OK with it.

OK, let me tell you the story...

I went to this local branch of a very famous chain restaurant to order dinner. I chose to order from the car hop. As I was waiting to pick my order, I watched this cute adorable cat that is a friend of the restaurant that keeps present next to the delivery door, I longed to go and just rub her head fondly. As I was watching the cat & enjoying the scene, a little kitten came on and sat cutely in front of the delivery door, surely anticipating some food to be thrown at him/her and his/her mother. Instead, the kitty almost got crushed by the foot of a delivery man that had came out heading to his bike, and received a heartless kick that got him/her flying down the little stairs and away from the man's way.

I completely and totally got shocked. I didn't see that coming at all. I was just happily watching that cute adorable creature, who was just calling out to the world, "Hey, look at me! I'm soooo cute, I want to eat; feed me!", and was going all "Awwww! So cute! Awwww!"; watching it get almost crushed & kicked like that wasn't at all in my what-might-happen-scenario. I mean, the kitties looked so close to the employees, and it's not the first time I've seen them at that restaurant. They are not that afraid of the the men walking around and are just acting almost like any pet cat you have. But even though, some of the employees seem to be friendly with the cats, (as no cat would get so close to any person unless they'd been friendly to them), some of them aren't acting friendly at all.

All baffled, I looked at the delivery man. He caught me eye & smiled.

WHAT IS HE SMILING FOR???

He just continued walking to his bike. Funnily enough, I found myself smiling.

WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH ME???  WHY AM I SMILING?!!

I believe I had a smile on my face because I was initially smiling at the kitties and the the shock just prevented me from functioning well for that moment. I immediately got my sense back later and was scolding him for what he did. He couldn't hear me though, the windows weren't down. However, I'm sure anyone could tell from my body language & facial expressions, that even though I smiled (for nanoseconds!), I was clearly upset with what he just did and highly disapproved of it. But he didn't do anything, and just drove off.

That's when I just felt I needed to do something.

I kept looking for the little kitty that suddenly disappeared. I was like, "Oh, my God, where did he/she go??" I thought of coming down from the car. I even unhooked my driver's seat. But the small cluster of restaurant employees standing outside (who might be on their break, and could have been oblivious to what had just happened), and the fear of creating a scene prevented me from doing that. Instead, I just thought of walking away and not getting my order. After all, how am I going to have anything to eat from that restaurant after what just happened?? I was getting really upset, that I was no longer hungry. Especially, to have their food. I switched the gear to R, and placed my right foot on the fuel preparing to go.

But then, it hit me. What will that do? Why would that be of any benefit? It certainly won't get anything changed. So instead of just going away without saying anything and fleeing the scene as if I discovered that I didn't have money to pay & wanted to avoid the embarrassment, I decided not to go before talking to the manager of the restaurant & tell him what just happened. So, I opened the window and called out to the man in a distinctive looking uniform than the rest of the employees that were standing outside whom I figured to be the manager, & then he came out to me.

This is pretty much what went on, on our conversation:

Manager: "Yes, how can I help you?"
Me (trying to sound assertive than emotional): "Yes, hello, are you the manager?"
He confirmed that he was, so I continued: "I'm sorry, but did you see what just happened? "
He looked a bit blank, wondered what I was referring to. He said that he didn't know what just happened.

I told him what happened, and that I no longer wish to have my order. I tried hard not to go emotional and successfully kept my tears away all throughout the conversation. I appeared tough from the outside, even though the words I spoke could tell that I'm a very caring person. Lucky for me, the manager was a sweet person; he cared for what I was saying & did not regard me as if I was some kind of Animal Rights crazy activist. I'm not. I just happen to care about animals, and cats are my favorite kind of animals ever. Whenever I see a cat or a kitty walking or running on the street, I always feel scared whenever they are passing by on the road, & pray to God not to run by one by mistake, 'cause that will kill me.

We continued talking for a while. I wish I can remember each word we said, but at the end of the conversation, these were the results:

The manager was very friendly, and quickly assured me that he will talk to the delivery man (which he did as the man came back later), right away offered me free dinner when I said I didn't feel like eating anymore, and asked me not to boycott the restaurant (I don't think I said anything about boycotting... but he just didn't want to lose any customer, it was clear. He was just doing his job).

I really felt more upset that he offered to give me my order without paying and really wished just to go; having him talk to the man would be enough for me. But he kept insisting and insisting, until I reluctantly accepted at the end, (I still wish that I didn't take it), and only after a very long string of NO NOs, and after a promise that the message will be sent and the issue will be addressed, (and by addressing the issue, I meant not having the cats to be thrown out - I don't mind having cats roaming around restaurants as long as the employees' hands stay away from them and the cats remain outside).

The delivery man has arrived back then, and the manager had a little talk with him, (I didn't see him talk to him, though, but he told me later that he did. In his defense, the man said that he didn't see it and almost crushed it. So I guess, kicking him was a way to save the kitty from being crushed?? Please! I saw how heartlessly his kick was, not a real kick by accident; it was deliberate!
But I cannot be sure about him not seeing it or not, he might have not really seen it. Still, kicking it is NO EXCUSE! You could just walk out of it's way, you know!

My guilt and unrest for taking the food without paying really halted me from going off in peace. So I drove back almost immediately, and looked for the manager again. He was inside talking to the delivery man by that time (as he told me later). I told him that I don't wanna be a reason for somebody's paycheck to be cut down or anything, and I don't want somebody to pray to God against me for ruining their day because of a little kitty and I hated to have my order without paying for it, but he kept insisting "genuinely" that I shouldn't mention it and shall be at peace with it.

But I still am not. Even though, I'm really starting to feel hungry. My order must be so beyond cold by now.

*****

It's true, the little kitty came back looking all fine & happy, anticipating some food again, but I know God doesn't allow anything like this. I and lots of other people certainly don't either. I usually see and hear horrendous violent acts against animals, sometimes right in front me, (like the cats -or shall I say, what remains of them- run on the streets everyday), but I rarely do anything "beneficial" about it except for going all in shock, tears, anger, or frequently joining animal lovers/supporters groups on Facebook. So, unless I start doing something that will really help spread the message about Animal Abuse and the need to be more humane & peaceful to the helpless animals, then all the tears, and fits of shock and anger won't do me any good, because it won't do the animals any good.

So, if anyone reading this now, and who has come across some heartless act like this towards animals, children, or any other helpless creature, the next time you encounter anything that raises a red flag in you, please don't look away & do something about it.

(Who knows, you might get something better than a free meal! ;P)
